Whilst Rescue and Releases are fantastic, you also have to deal with the sad cases…
An extremely sad case arrived late last night when Josh brought me a 5/6 week old Kestrel chick. He was found in a friends garden in Radwinter and, as they knew Josh had an interest in birds of prey, they asked if he could help. Josh kindly called me and brought the bird over as I was in the middle of feeding rounds. And what a shocking state his eyes were in. One was sunken and weepy and the other badly swollen. Kestrels depend 100% on their eyesight to hunt whilst hovering so not possible to release them with only one eye and certainly not with two eyes affected. Hydrated, medicated and later fed him last night and again this morning and every indication was that he had no sight at all in either eye. Took him to see my Vet, Robert Lees, at Linkswood Veterinary Centre this morning and the expected decision was the kindest thing was to put him to sleep. We will never know what happened to him but he is now out of pain. Fly high my baby – sorry I could not do more to help you…
