The next Bird of Prey to receive their BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) ring was Kestrel, Stebbing. Every day is a school day and it is when you do the biometrics that you find out more about your charges. It turns out, after lots of checking and double checking, that Stebbing is a male. The wing length fell right in the middle of the male and female readings so not much help. Normally the lack of a grey head indicates it is a female but with juvenile birds this is not necessarily the case. The grey section of feathers on the back and above the tail feathers are very grey with stripes of black and this was the decider. Fascinating and many thanks to Barry and Lucie for getting the clarification. Stebbing will go back to his home territory in about a week and, hopefully, will live a long and happy life…
