First baby Tawny Owl arrives to start the Baby Season…

After a couple of false starts with calls about Tawny owlets in Canterbury and Somerset(!), that I referred to nearer Rescues, last evening saw the arrival of my first “baby” of the season. Steve rang from Little Yeldham to say he had found a baby owl in his garden with no sign of any parent, nest or siblings. The trees in his acre garden are very high and he could not see any sign of a nest anywhere so arranged for him and son, Stan, to bring the owlet over to me. Little Yeldham duly arrived, cute as a button and about two weeks old. Quite subdued upon arrival but he was most probably hungry and confused. Let him settle whilst I prepared his cage then hydrated and later fed him. He ate with gusto and took everything from the tweezers, which is excellent. Checked him over and no apparent injuries but, at this age, if they fall they often “bounce” without injuring themselves. Asked Steve and Stan to check the garden again when they returned to see if there were any other owlets in a similar predicament. They will do this again for the next few days in case any more are in need of help. Fed Little Yeldham again before I went to bed and again at 6 am this morning. He is looking a lot brighter and aware of his surroundings and is very happy with his hot water bottle and Teddy Bears to cuddle up with…Bless…
