Call in the middle of the night to help a Tawny Owl in Cambridge…
When the phone rings at 1.15 am, you know that something is in trouble. Telephone call from Reham and Alex in Cambridge who had picked up an injured Tawny Owl between Milton and Cambridge city centre. He was sat by the side of the road at the major roundabout and, because it was so late, it enabled them to stop and pick the bird up. Arranged for them to bring the bird over to me, which they very kindly did, arriving at 2.15 am. Cambridge looked quite stunned and both wings were very floppy, which would indicate a severe concussion. No actual injuries but when I went to administer hydration and painkiller, there was a lot of bleeding in the mouth. As a result I did not attempt to feed him but left him cuddled up with a hot water bottle to sleep off the worst of the effects of being clipped by a car. This morning he was a bit brighter and the mouth had stopped bleeding, but he did have a head tilt, which is worrying, although he ate very well, which is excellent news. Will see how he gets on but, hopefully, we can get him right and back out to where he belongs. My thanks to Reham and Alex for picking him up and getting him the help he so obviously needed…
